This is the second of four videos of the "Evolution of a Pool Table". In the video you begin to get a good sense of what the final table is going to look like. It shows what the old hand hewn oak looks like with the fine sanding and lacquer finish applied. Our unique Cayonland Copper corner details are installed on the table legs. The finely carved leather rails and leg panels created by renowned tooler Phillip Smith. Noah Pfeffer is the well known jeweler responsible for the hand cut turquoise sites set in silver bezels. He is also the craftsman who made the refined silver Western Heritage logo set into the end rail. I incorporated seven deferent species of wood throughout the the pool table. I used 200+ year old oak for the super structure, walnut on the top rails, poplar for the sub rails, reclaimed rosewood for the rail edge caps, 100+ year old pine barn siding for the rail aprons and 80+ year old douglas fir for the raised panels in the tables skirt. I believe the marriage of all these different woods along with the tooled leather, jewelery quality sites and professional grade felt form a perfect union.

Custom reclaimed wood pool table from Western Heritage Furniture.
This pool table's design is based on elements from our Teton Collection
of Furniture. Inspired by the grandeur and beauty of the Teton
Mountains in western Wyoming, this Teton table has a massive presence. It incorporates a combination of reclaimed wood beams, hand carved leather and copper details seamlessly married together in this one of a kind creation.

The Pool table's superstructure will be constructed using two identical hand hewn oak beams. The exact history of these beams is unknown, however we reclaimed them from a barn in Iowa a few years back. The barn was constructed about 100 years ago using Douglas Fir. These beams were salvaged from a much older structure then reused in the building of this barn.

In the video you will notice the nature of the ax and adz marks left by the original craftsman. One can tell a lot about the craftsman by these markings as well as the fact that both beams are exactly 7" x 7" square. This particular pioneer probably fell these trees 170 to 200 years ago, long before there were saw mills.

as we look forward to a prosperous new one. As you may know, over 130

are we - a small victory - but still a victory nonetheless, because of you.
Congratulations! As of 2010 Western Heritage has decided to quit
playing the recession game. Join us in another prosperous new year.

BY ERIKA AYN FINCH; PHOTOGRAPHS BY DEBBIE WEINKAUFF

Tim McClellan: Furniture Designer, Engineer, and Builder

I’m an overnight success story…after 15 years,” laughs Tim McClellan,
co-owner of Western Heritage Furniture in Jerome. While working in the
car business in Everett, Wash., in 1991, Tim was dating a woman who
fell in love with a log bed she saw in a catalog. Always the charmer,
Tim told her he could build the same bed and went about gathering slash
and burn logs from the surrounding forest. When his girlfriend’s friend
saw the bed, she asked Tim to make one for her too. She paid him $250.

Flash-forward
to 2003 when Tim created a desk for a design conference in Cody, Wyo.
He used cherry wood, buckboard, buffalo head nickels, copper, leather,
and maple to create the Presidential Desk – it sold, sight unseen, for
$25,000.

In between the bed and the desk, Tim, who
was born in Florida and grew up in Virginia, relocated to Jerome. He
originally came to Arizona to help his sister set up a sandwich shop
and fell in love with the Verde Valley. In 1994, he moved his company,
called Whittleman Furniture at the time, to the old 8,000-sq.-ft.
Mingus Union H.S. gym in Jerome, and rechristened it Western Heritage
Furniture in 1996. For the first five years, he worked with high-end
clients in Scottsdale and Sedona. It was during this time he designed
the Ghostwood Collection, which is Western Heritage’s most popular
collection. “In Seattle,” he recalls, “I would look at the piles of
wood [lumber companies] would burn each year and I’d see piles of gold.
When I came here I saw all the buildings crumbling and falling to the
ground and I had the same reaction – I saw value.”

The
Ghostwood Collection consists of tables, desks, chairs, benches, and
mirrors made from wood of old homes, barns, and lofts. Tim teamed with
Tim McCune in 2000 to expand Western Heritage, which now includes the
Heritage, Signature, and Tim McClellan collections. Each piece comes
with background about the building from which it was made – the wood,
usually Douglas fir and pine, mostly comes from the midwest.

Though
anyone can visit Western Heritage’s showroom and workshop on Hwy 89A
(the company now has 30 employees – Tim still does all the design and
engineering but he has a staff of builders), Tim doesn’t sell directly
to the public; his pieces are carried in 140 stores in the U.S. and
Canada and through interior designers. While Tim says he hates the
business aspect of his career, he’s proud to be “reclaiming old
Americana.”

“To design and create with my hands is what I want to do most in this world,” he says. “I just want to create.” •

Western Heritage Furniture depends on one-of-a-kind resources to
build our Ghostwood Collection. Since our wood doesn't grow on trees,
we have to find it in unique areas of the United States. Old buildings
like tabacco barns, hay lofts, homes and ranches are frequent choices
for reclaimed wood.
The acquisition process is a historial process. Our wood has lived,
been through years of reliable service and is ready for retirement when
it is given a second life. Through our Ghostwood Collection wood ready
for destruction is given new life.

Sometimes we find the wood, and sometimes the wood finds us. Friends, family and customers all are excellent for new projects.
Western Heritage Furniture is always interested in reclaiming quality wood structures with an interesting history.
If you would like to contact us about reclaiming a structure please call 1-800-616-1424.
